The Lightning Network is a payment channel system layered on top of Bitcoin. Transactions inside a channel settle instantly between the two channel participants. No block confirmation is needed because the funds are not moving on the main Bitcoin blockchain. Many gateways enforce a waiting period of several block confirmations before they release the other asset.
The same logic applies in reverse. Swapping another asset for Lightning Bitcoin means the gateway sends you a Lightning payment. That payment is instant within Lightning. But the gateway first had to receive the other asset on its native chain, which required confirmations there. The total time is not zero.
A second limitation: Lightning payments are capped by channel capacity. A single channel cannot carry more Bitcoin than its participants committed to it. Large swaps may exceed available channel liquidity, forcing the swap to fall back to on-chain Bitcoin settlements.
The Lightning Network also requires both sender and receiver to be online and to have a functioning node. If the receiver is offline, the payment fails. On-chain Bitcoin can be received at any time.
For a non-custodial swap, you need to run your own Lightning node or trust a third-party node. The exchanger you use may or may not support non-custodial Lightning swaps. Most swap services that accept Lightning still require you to send Bitcoin from a Lightning wallet they control, or they route through a custodial node.
If you want to swap Bitcoin for another asset and avoid on-chain confirmations entirely, you must stay inside the Lightning ecosystem. That means the other asset must also be a Lightning-compatible token or a sidechain that speaks the Lightning protocol. Assets native to other blockchains cannot be swapped without some form of bridge, and every bridge introduces its own confirmation delay or trust assumption.

Lightning offers speed for small, frequent swaps between compatible assets. For larger swaps or cross-chain moves, on-chain confirmations remain the standard.
